So, this is happening a little sooner than I had anticipated. But the series is doing decently well, so I really want to capitalize on the opportunity by getting audiobooks done ASAP.
Just contracted with super talented narrator to get the first Starsea book done and he is interested in doing the rest as well! He said he can get the first book done by mid-April. At which point I can submit the files for publication on Audible and everywhere else people get their audiobooks. And of course, get started on Book 2, and after that, Book 3. By the time Book 4 comes out, I’m hoping everything can release more or less at the same time.
Words can’t describe how elated I am. I know must of you folks are probably primarily e-book readers (as am I), but this is a HUGE opportunity since audiobooks have exploded in popularity over the last few years, and it gives me an opportunity to find new readers who “read” in that format.
For those of you who want to experience the story in a new way, then you will love the narrator’s rendition of Lucian. On the first take he got his voice pretty much exactly right, and did a great job differentiating the nuances of each of the characters and really getting the interactions right on a more or less blind read through which just some stage direction. Since the series is largely character-driven, finding someone who could voice the characters right was of vital importance to me.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know the news. It’s not going to be cheap. Originally, I thought I’d wait on audiobooks until the series has proven itself more. But as the days have passed, I’ve realized that I strongly believe in Starsea. Sales are higher than expected (not crazy, but better). And 50% of people who buy the first book go on to buy the second, which is a pretty decent number for me, especially because I took a huge creative risk in making book 1 more character-driven than plot-driven (which defies genre conventions at least for this corner of fantasy). That said, I think the people who decide to go on to books 2 and 3 will see that the payoff is worth it.
Anyway, all that to say, this is going to be awesome! Thankfully, my cover artist provided me with audiobook covers in advance. Here’s Mages of Starsea!
